U.S. Embassy Now Accepting Applications for PEPFAR Small Grants

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) 2015 Small Grants Program application is now open. Registered community-based organizations working in the areas of HIV and AIDS prevention and the care and support of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are eligible to apply. The U.S. Embassy is accepting applications for grant awards up to ZMK 100,000 until February 28, 2015.

“More than 500 community and faith-based organizations have received support from the PEPFAR Small Grants Program to offer HIV and AIDS prevention programs and support for orphans and vulnerable children,” said Dr. Tamu Daniel, acting PEPFAR country coordinator. “PEPFAR’s small grants program gives community-based organizations the opportunity to grow and thrive.”

Small grants for prevention programs help stop the spread of HIV and AIDS by promoting behavioral changes that reduce the risk of infection, voluntary testing and counseling, and other effective prevention methods. Some past OVC projects include training families and caretakers of OVC in life-skills, providing psychosocial support, and strengthening communities’ capacity to care for OVC.

“I encourage community-based organizations including neighborhood groups, faith-based organizations, and institutions of learning to apply,” said Dr. Daniel. “Community-based partnerships play a significant role in Zambia’s national HIV response because they know where the needs are and address them in innovative ways.”

Applicants must demonstrate prior success in working in HIV/AIDS prevention or with OVC, how the activities proposed will be sustained over the long term, and a monetary or in-kind contribution to the project from the organization or from its community. Applicants must be legally registered non-profit organization in Zambia. Projects will be completed by September 30, 2016.
