The U.S. Embassy, in collaboration with Umodzi Arts Organization, proudly announces the tour of renowned U.S. dance company Step Afrika! on September 9-14, 2019, as part of the U.S. Department of State’s “Arts Envoy” program.
Step Afrika! ranks among the top dance companies in the United States. The dynamic African-American dance troupe, whose performances combine step, hip-hop, ballet, and traditional African dance, will demonstrate the close connections between Africa and the United States in a series of performances and workshops in Kabwe and Lusaka.
The Zambian public will have the opportunity to attend performances at Makululu Grounds in Kabwe, on September 11, and at the Government Complex in Lusaka, on September 14.
Step Afrika!’s tour will serve the immediate goal of contributing to Zambia’s march towards epidemic control of HIV by 2020. In dance, the concept of “stepping” highlights pride and unity. This concept will be the focus of the program, encouraging young people to take a unified step towards an AIDS-free Zambia.
Each year, the U.S. Embassy organizes cultural exchange programs to build capacity and strengthen bilateral relations. The Arts Envoy program promotes an improved understanding of U.S. social, political, and economic perspectives, and enhances awareness of U.S. culture and society. As cultural ambassadors, Step Afrika! will also conduct workshops, masterclasses, and community outreach activities while its members learn from and share with Zambians.
The U.S. Embassy recognizes the support of local sponsors for this tour, including the program’s official hotel sponsor Neelkanth Sarovar Premiere Hotel and co-sponsors Prudential Life Assurance and 3@1 Business Center.
