United States Embassy Lusaka, Zambia
Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Political Rallies and Demonstrations
January 13, 2015
The U.S. Embassy would like to remind all U.S. citizens that political rallies or demonstrations may occur without significant notice throughout Zambia, particularly in the lead up to the Zambian presidential election on January 20, 2015.
U.S. citizens are reminded that otherwise peaceful public rallies have the potential to turn confrontational or escalate into violence. You should stay alert, avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gathering, protest, or demonstration.
Peaceful gatherings may also lead to significant traffic congestion and road closures. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates on political rallies and traffic disruptions. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Zambia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.
If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy. To receive SMS notices about security updates, ensure your current mobile phone number is in STEP or contact the Consular section via email at ACSLusaka@state.gov for assistance.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Zambia. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
